    broken image

I am an academic editor specialising in fields related to politics, philosophy, and international relations. I have extensive experience in copyediting, developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading fiction, academic, and non-academic texts, in the form of books, articles, chapters, reports, translations, blog posts and even short live-update news reportage.

I hold a PhD, Master of Arts, Master of Letters, and Bachelor of Social Science and Economics in the field of International Politics from two highly-ranked UK universities, and have published my own research. I am currently a research fellow of the Centre for Advanced Studies in South East Europe in Rijeka, Croatia, where I live.

My own research is interdisciplinary, between international politics, philosophy, and political theology. Through my editing work, and through working as a research assistant on larger projects, I have experience with a wide range of academic disciplines, including interdisciplinary work. I am a native speaker of British English, and regularly work in American English.

  • What do I offer?

I offer three editing options. If you are unsure about which is best for you, send me an email and we can decide together.

    Proofreading

Proofreading is for very-almost-finished documents, immediately prior to submission or publication. It looks for things like typos, lost punctuation, spelling mistakes, issues with formatting, and grammatical errors. Proofreading is appropriate for texts which will no longer significantly change, like the final draft of a thesis, or an article or book manuscript.

    Line Editing

Line editing deals much more with prose and style. When line editing I read more slowly, and alongside proofreading the text, I also make suggestions about changing things that aren't necessarily mistakes, but which would improve the flow or understandability of the text. In line editing whole sentences will often end up being reworded, very long sentences broken down, and awkward phrases or unclear formulations improved. This is often the sweet spot in terms of language editing, as I take more time to think about the reader's experience with fresh eyes. In line editing, major improvements can be made to a text without the author being required to substantively redraft or spend excessive time responding to, or deciding upon, comments and suggestions.

    Developmental Editing

Developmental editing, which takes place at an earlier stage of manuscript preparation, gets involved with more substantive elements like argument and structure. It engages with, and makes suggestions about, the clarity of the argument, whether the evidence and analysis support the argument, whether the structure is logical, who the intented audience is, what could be missing, what could be superfluous, sections that might need to be moved around, and so on. This is a good option for pre-submission manuscripts or when wrangling with turning thesis material into publications, but not so much right before you're about to send something off.

  • Testimonials

Here are some things that previous clients have said about me:

I had the pleasure of working with Paul Blamire when I was hired to translate a highly regarded piece of literature. Paul's task was to review the translation, and he did a brilliant job. He significantly improved the translation with his spot-on suggestions and meticulous corrections. I heartily recommend Paul for any editing services that require a high level of professionalism and precision.

    Dragana Divković, Translator

Paul line edited a paper of mine for a major European IR journal prior to final submission. He made significant improvements to the text. His suggestions were always well-thought through and in line with the intellectual argument of the paper, which is one of the reasons why I would not hesitate for a second to work with him again in the future. Paul is professional and quick in his communication, collegial and meticulously precise.

Dr Suzanne Klein Schaarsberg, Postdoctoral Researcher International Sociology of Religion & Politics, Tilburg University

Paul proofread my master's thesis to my great satisfaction. He has been extremely reliable, responsive and attentive throughout the process, and paid meticulous attention to detail. Next to his linguistic competencies, I particularly appreciated his expertise in political science.

    Laura, University of Graz

Collaborating with Paul has been a great experience. He has a high level of professionalism, knowledge, and attention to detail. His insightful comments precisely addressed the challenges I faced with the manuscript, leading to effective solutions. He is straightforward and articulate, which makes him an invaluable asset as an editor.
